Broadway is a road in the county of New York and on the island of Manhattan. It runs from State Street in lower Manhattan all the way through the Bronx and through Westchester municipalities of Yonkers, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry and Tarrytown, and ending north of Tarrytown. It is the oldest north–south main thoroughfare in New York City, with much of the current street beginning as the Wickquasgeck trail before the arrival of Europeans. This formed the basis for one of the primary thoroughfares of the Dutch New Amsterdam colony, which continued under British rule, although most of it did not bear its current name until the late 19th century.
Because of heavy congestion including e-bikes, electric scooters, pedestrians, traditional pedal bikes, cars, delivery trucks and vans, tractor-trailers and more, there are many accidents that take place on Broadway every year.
A section of Broadway in Manhattan became a car-free zone after an out of control taxi hopped a curb and collided onto a pedestrian packed sidewalk. Mayor Eric Adams had announced plans to make changes to the area in midtown, including restricting most vehicular traffic from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the part of Broadway stretching from West 29th Street, where the crash occurred, down to West 27th Street.
Two people were left trapped under the taxi SUV after the 60-year-old driver had tried to turn onto Broadway.
On June 21, 2022, an NYC yellow-cab dragged a bicyclist and hit three women on a sidewalk after running a red-light on Broadway. The impact threw the bicyclist to the roadway, and the taxi dragged him briefly before it hopped the curb and started traveling down the sidewalk, coming to a rest further down Broadway. Six people were injured in the crash, three critically, police said. New Yorkers then turned into heroes by helping to save the victims. The crowd of onlookers tried to lift the vehicle off the trapped women after the afternoon accident. Cops described a “remarkable” scene as some 15 to 20 people rushed over to help move the taxi off the women. Two women, a 32-year-old and a 48-year-old, were taken to a hospital in critical condition with serious injuries to their legs. The four injured pedestrians are all tourists, two from Mexico and two from Ohio.

March 31, 2023: A motorcycle accident at Broadway and West 116th Street resulted in severe injuries. The New York Police Department and New York Fire Department responded to the scene of an automobile accident in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan that left one person injured. Reports from the New York City Police Department show that a motorcyclist was struck by a vehicle on West 116th Street at the intersection of Broadway. The motorcyclist suffered injuries as a result of the crash. Paramedics had been called to care for the victim before transporting them to a local hospital for further medical care.
