Public buses provide a convenient alternative to driving where it makes the most sense. Unfortunately, negligent public transit drivers, inadequate driver training, sub-par bus maintenance, and over-worked bus drivers are sometimes the reason for avoidable bus accidents in Chinatown involving public transportation buses that cause injury and sometimes even death to bus riders, pedestrians, automobile drivers and bicycle riders amongst other innocent victims who live, work and travel through Chinatown.

City buses in Chinatown, NYC also lack the safety features that most modern-day automobiles take for granted, such as seat belts, soft surfaces and air bags. Accordingly, bus accidents often result in more serious injuries to its passengers than if you were in a private vehicle.

Thousands of People Are Injured or Killed Every Year

NEWS: March 17, 2011: Passengers and witnesses to a New York City bus crash that killed 15 people are contradicting the driver’s story that he was clipped by a tractor-trailer before the accident, a law enforcement source said Sunday, March 13. Many of the passengers on the bus were residents of Manhattan’s Chinatown. They ranged in age from 20 to 50, officials said. Passengers said that the driver swerved at times to the right for no reason before sliding off the road at dawn on Saturday and into a sign pole.

An official said that passengers stated they didn’t feel anything hit them. Other motorists on Interstate 95 said they didn’t see the bus get hit. The official said police spoke to the tractor-trailer driver, who said he was following the bus. The victims had traveled for a quick overnight trip to a casino and were returning to Manhattan’s Chinatown. As many as 20 people were treated at hospitals. Nine, including the driver, remained hospitalized Sunday, according to spokespeople for St. Barnabas Hospital and Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. Most were in critical condition.

World Wide Travel of Greater New York, the operator of the bus, said it in a statement that the company was “heartbroken” and cooperating with investigators.
