The Cross Bronx Expressway is a major freeway that runs through New York City’s Bronx county. It is mainly designated as part of I-95, but also includes portions of I-295 and U.S. Route 1. Although the road goes primarily northwest-to-southeast, the nominal directions of all route numbers west of the Bruckner Interchange are aligned with the northbound route number going southeast, and the southbound route number going northwest.
This roadway is extremely dangerous and accidents on this stretch of road occur frequently.
January, 2021: 8 people were injured after an MTA bus went over the rail, dangling over the Cross-Bronx Expressway. According to reports, an MTA bus driver was “traveling at a high rate of speed” when his articulated bus careened off a Bronx overpass Thursday night. According to reports by MTA officials, the GPS revealed the bus appeared to be traveling at 17-26 mph during the incident. “We know the speed limit on the road is 25 mph, but the appropriate speed for taking a turn such as this is between 3 and 4 miles per hour,” MTA Chief Safety Officer Pat Warren said. “So we can say at this time while the investigation is ongoing, speed is clearly a factor and is obviously of great concern to us.” Authorities said that the 55-year-old driver Everton Beccan was on his regular route when he attempted to turn left off University Avenue onto a ramp to the Washington Bridge and the Bx35 bus suddenly veered off the road.
The FDNY said the bus fell approximately 50 feet onto the access road below, and half of the vehicle was left hanging off University Avenue feet from the Cross Bronx Expressway below. The driver went through the bus to check on the seven passengers, who were all subsequently rescued and taken to the hospital. All were expected to survive, although one of the passengers was more seriously injured than the others. Officials said that the bus operator suffered bruises, cuts, body pains and a broken jaw. The bus operator, an 11-year NYC Transit veteran, had a clean safety and service record prior to the incident, according to officials.
November 29, 2022: MORRIS HEIGHTS, Bronx, NY. The westbound lanes of the Cross Bronx Expressway reopened, nearly twelve hours after a horrific, deadly chain reaction crash involving an SUV and two tractor trailers. The collision happened at 12:35 a.m. when a woman’s Range Rover collided with a tractor trailer contracted by the U.S. Postal Service, in the westbound lanes. The woman was sitting in her crashed vehicle, stopped behind the tractor trailer, when another tractor slammed into her vehicle. The impact set the sedan ablaze, and the flames spread to the first tractor trailer. People living nearby say they could smell the smoke as soon as they stepped out of their front doors. “It was really loud,” one resident was reported as saying. “It kind of felt like a bomb being dropped down. And then after that first one you could hear two more loud ‘booms’ coming after that. And it sounded the same as the first. Then after a minute it went silent. Then all you could here were the firetrucks and the ambulance coming.”

A white BMW attempted to pass a tractor-trailer at 1:43 a.m., apparently causing the crash near the exits for the Major Deegan Expressway, with the BMW smashing into the rear driver’s side door of the tractor-trailer. Ultimately, the BMW got pinned between the tractor-trailer and the concrete divided, resulting in the death of its passenger. Excessive speed was thought to be a possible factor in the crash. The crash closed the westbound lanes of the Cross Bronx Expressway for Wednesday morning’s commute.
