What Is Distracted Driving?

NHTSA defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts the driver’s attention from driving. It can be visual (taking your eyes off the road), manual (taking your hands off the wheel), or cognitive (taking your mind off your driving). Texting is a combination of all three.

Examples of driver distraction include:

  • Texting
  • Talking on a cell phone
  • Talking to passengers in the vehicle
  • Adjusting the stereo or entertainment system
  • Operating the navigation system
  • Eating or drinking
  • Grooming or applying cosmetics

Distracted Driving Statistics

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports nearly 3,500 distracted driving deaths and 391,000 distracted driving injuries in the U.S. in a recent year. According to NHTSA, approximately 481,000 people are using cell phones while driving during daylight hours. NHTSA determined that in a recent year:

  • 2% of drivers were texting or visibly manipulating handheld devices
  • 8% were talking on handheld cell phones
  • 6% were speaking with visible headsets while driving

National Distracted Driving Survey

In a nationally representative NHTSA telephone survey on distracted driving, researchers found that, of the respondents who had been in a crash or near-crash during the past year, 6% reported using a cell phone at the time of the accident — 4% were talking on the phone, 1% were sending a text or email, and 1% were reading a text or email.

When asked how talking on the phone affects their driving, more than half of respondents said that it makes no difference. When asked about the impact on their driving of sending text messages or emails, 25% said it makes no difference to their driving. Approximately one-third of males and one-quarter of females said they drive slower while sending text messages or emails.
