How Does a Multiple Car Accident Happen?

Multi-car accidents often involve more than two vehicles colliding in a chain reaction of rear-end accidents. Typically, the force of the first car colliding with the car ahead pushes the second car into the car ahead of it, and so on.

Chain reaction or multiple-car crashes often involve both primary and secondary impact. Primary impact occurs when the at-fault driver collides with another vehicle. A secondary impact may occur when drivers attempting to avoid a crash collide with each other. The risk of injury and death increases in multi-vehicle accidents with primary and secondary impact.

Types of Multi-Vehicle Crashes

Traffic crashes involving multiple vehicles can occur in different ways. The following are some of the most serious types of multiple car accidents:

  • A car rear-ends the car ahead and gets rear-ended, in turn, by the car behind, causing a chain reaction of rear-end collisions.
  • A collision between two vehicles propels one of the vehicles into the lane of oncoming traffic. This causes motorists to swerve in an attempt to avoid a collision and collide with each other as a result.
  • A driver runs a red light and crashes into several vehicles traveling through the intersection on the green light.
  • A driver changes lanes too quickly, causing other vehicles to stop short and swerve out of the lane, colliding with other vehicles.
  • Too much acceleration under icy road conditions causes a vehicle to spin and slide into the adjacent lane of traffic. An oncoming vehicle, unable to stop, rear-ends the first vehicle, propelling it forward into a third vehicle ahead.

Who Is Liable in a Multiple Car Accident?

In most situations, the driver behind who hits the driver ahead is liable for the accident, but multiple car accidents may be different. These collisions can be complex cases in which it is difficult to determine who is at fault. In fact, there may be more than one responsible party. Although the driver that started the chain reaction is usually at fault, in some cases there may be two or more drivers sharing the fault for a multi-vehicle pileup.
